The Indianapolis Colts’ QB room just got pretty interesting.
The team spent big bucks to sign Daniel Jones and bring in some competition for Anthony Richardson.
Needless to say, this isn’t necessarily encouraging for the fans.
However, offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter believes that this competition will bring the best out of both of them.
“Yeah, those guys are, I think, eager to compete,” offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said in a Wednesday press conference. “Competition kind of makes us all better. Got an opportunity to go out there and get some reps, and go through our process. Spring is always a good time of year to dive back into the details in the quarterback room, especially, and kind of make sure you’re in lockstep with what we’re doing offensively, and that can give you the best chance to go succeed.”
Jones is big, strong, and fast, so perhaps they will be able to get something out of him after watching him struggle over and over with the New York Giants.
Then again, he’s far from a guarantee.
Even so, the fact that the Colts chose to pursue him in the offseason speaks volumes about their level of concern for Richardson.
They looked ready to throw in the towel and give up on him midway through his second year in the league, which was actually his first full season.
He’s perhaps the most athletic quarterback in the league.
He has a cannon for an arm, a massive frame, and can scramble like the best of them.
Unfortunately, between his injury-proneness, his tapping-out fiasco, and his head-scratching lack of accuracy and decision-making, he might never turn out to be as good as they thought he’d be.
Once again, the Colts will have a strong team with high playoff aspirations, but their quarterback play could spell disaster for Shane Steichen’s team.
Still, some quarterbacks need more time to learn, so maybe one of these two will finally make a leap in 2025.
