The Philadelphia Eagles are usually a logical landing spot for proven veterans looking to win.
That, plus his ties to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, make them an appealing destination for Justin Simmons.
With that in mind, Mason Cameron of PFF pointed out that it would make sense for both parties to work a deal pretty soon:
“Following the trade of C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the Eagles addressed the safety position in the draft by selecting Andrew Mukuba, a dynamic option for the back end. However, the defense could use more depth at the position. Justin Simmons is one potential solution,” Cameron wrote. “Although he’s never played for Philadelphia, Simmons is well-acquainted with Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who coached for three seasons in Denver.”
Notably, the former Denver Broncos star safety admitted that he would love to play for the Eagles.
In a recent sit-down with Kay Adams, he chose the Eagles, Buffalo Bills, and Cincinnati Bengals as the teams he would like to play for next season.
Even so, the Eagles should be quite careful with this decision.
Simmons is a proven asset, and reuniting him with his former head coach would make him a seamless fit there.
Nevertheless, they have to make sure that he doesn’t stunt the development of some of the players they already have on their roster.
They should give Mukuba an opportunity to prove himself, and they already have a well-known starter in Reed Blankenship.
GM Howie Roseman has made a living out of combining youth with talent and landing former stars who suddenly become available.
Simmons is coming off another strong season and has been one of the best players in his position for years now, so he certainly fits the Eagles’ mold.
Maybe the team will make a decision after watching Mukuba at their rookie minicamp, and even though other teams will keep tabs on Simmons, they still have more than enough time to sign him.
