The Dallas Cowboys just took a big swing.
They didn’t address their wide receiver room in free agency or the NFL Draft, but they still managed to get a potential star by trading for George Pickens.
Notably, the Cowboys got another big-play specialist, and according to an unnamed coach, they got a similar player to CeeDee Lamb:
“The only thing they are similar in is their frame,” said one NFC opposing coach of the players who stand at 6-foot-3 and 6-2, each 200 pounds. “Pickens’ skill set is more of your true X receiver, outside threat, vertical route-runner. Great catch radius. CeeDee has a more diverse route tree. Can be moved around. In the slot and outside. Think there is a lot [of] versatility in Lamb’s game.”
Of course, Lamb has already established himself as one of the finest pass-catchers in the league, whereas Pickens has yet to prove that he can be a consistent contributor.
If he’s bought in and locked in, he can be one of the biggest difference-makers in the game.
Also, having him out there should open up plenty of space and lanes not only to move Lamb around the field but also to get him some wide-open looks.
Still, it’s also worth noting that he does come with some major risks.
For starters, he has a long history of temper tantrums, antics, and social media rants, and he hasn’t shown much accountability or coachability in the past.
He was mad even when his team was winning, and his demeanor was a major concern once he got a big-money deal.
On top of that, the Cowboys have usually fared better when they’ve been a run-heavy team.
Dak Prescott has often fallen short in key moments when the team has needed him to lead the way, and with little to no running game and a revamped WR room, the Cowboys will most likely have to turn to their quarterback more often.
