The New York Jets have a new quarterback for the upcoming campaign.
Justin Fields is going to start a new chapter in his career, and this might be his final shot to be a starter in the league.
Notably, the Jets will have a proven veteran to back him up just in case.
However, Tyrod Taylor doesn’t see it as a competition.
If anything, he wants to support him.
Talking to ESPN, the veteran signal-caller claimed that he was going to be there for him and hoped him nothing but the best:
“We’ve been good friends throughout his time in the league as well,” Taylor said. “So I’m here to support and help the team win in any form or fashion, whether it’s me on the field or whether it’s me being able to shed some light and experience and coach guys through, whether it’s in the quarterback room or any other position.”
Fields was once considered to be one of the best quarterback prospects in the nation.
Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to live up to those expectations.
Even so, it’s hard to blame him.
The Chicago Bears did everything they could to set him up for failure.
They never built the offense around his skills, didn’t give him a good supporting cast, and they had a subpar offensive line with an even worse offensive scheme.
Then, when it seemed like his career had gotten on track, the Pittsburgh Steelers chose to roll with Russell Wilson, who was significantly older and not at the peak of his powers anymore.
For the first time in his career, Fields will play for a team that seems to be high on him and willing to build the offense around his strengths.
Now, he will have to hold his end of the bargain, and he will have a veteran to help him from day one.
